… a site where teachers and students can explore science through the lens of the water utility projects in Monterey County. California American Water, the sponsor of this page, has placed this project on hold for the time being. Check back in 2017 for more lessons and resources.
What We’re About
Water Education Today (WET) by California American Water (CalAm) is a unique effort designed to generate long-term solutions to the specific water challenges facing Monterey County and the world by investing in the next generation of decision makers. By providing quality science lessons that highlight water utility projects, students will gain the ability to become informed participants in their community‘s water decisions.
This project is being developed in keeping with the National Academies of Sciences’ Resilient America Roundtable. Communities become more resilient, more able to withstand adverse circumstances, when people understand and value their lifelines, the infrastructure that supplies their necessary resources.
It’s our hope that working together in classrooms on topics such as water supply engineering, waste-water chemistry, and the environmental considerations in dam removal and desalination, students will be equipped to lead the way in positive dialogues, seeking collaborative solutions within our communities for the water challenges we face.
What We Do
WET provides NGSS and CC-aligned water science lessons free to educators for use in middle and high school classrooms. The lessons are interesting and engaging for students and easy to implement by teachers – check them out on the Teacher page!
WET also provides hands-on, interactive Professional Development (PD) workshops for educators to learn more about both NGSS and water science. The one day workshops, sponsored by Cal Am, are free to educators and are sure to bolster the understanding of the oftentimes complicated world of NGSS as well as providing a stimulating environment for each participant to learn and develop new and creative water science lessons.
